Fort Mill, Tega Cay and York are the three incorporated cities and towns nearest Rock Hill, about 7, 7 and 13 miles from its center, and all four are in York County. (Lake Wylie, closer than York, is an unincorporated community, and Marvin, N.C., is across the state line.) This page puts the official figures side by side, one table per topic. What this means for you

Property taxes
South Carolina taxes property in mills, dollars per $1,000 of assessed value. A primary residence is assessed at 4% of its value and other property at 6%, and the owner-occupied rate leaves out the school operating levies. York County’s 2026 Millage Levies give these totals for each city:
| City | City levy | School levy | County levy | Total, 6% property | Owner-occupied, 4% |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rock Hill (district RH) | 94.7 | 263.1 | 67.2 | 425.0 | 209.9 |
| Fort Mill | 87.0 | 429.4 | 67.2 | 583.6 | 236.5 |
| Tega Cay | 86.0 | 429.4 | 67.2 | 582.6 | 235.5 |
| York | 110.7 | 354.8 | 67.2 | 532.7 | 270.9 |
All four pay the same 67.2-mill county levy. The school levy is each district’s operating and bond levies plus a 30-mill countywide school levy: Rock Hill Schools 185.1 operating and 47.0 bonds (plus a 1-mill capital reserve), Fort Mill Schools 317.1 and 82.3, and York School District 1 231.8 and 93.0.
As an illustration only, using the county’s estimating formula (tax value x 4% x millage), an owner-occupied home with a tax value of $300,000 works out to about $2,519 a year in Rock Hill, $2,838 in Fort Mill, $2,826 in Tega Cay and $3,251 in York, before any credits shown on the bill.
Homestead exemption: the state program exempts the first $50,000 of a primary residence’s value for owners who are 65 or older, blind or disabled. It is handled by the York County Auditor’s Office in all four cities. More in our property taxes guide.
