History
The city’s 2023 Southside Rock Hill Historic Resource Survey (PDF) traces the neighborhood’s growth:
- April 1940: J. E. Marshall Jr. platted the first section, bounded by Friedheim Street, the Southern Railroad and Maple Street, with small lots on fairly straight streets.
- 1950-52: extended south of Maple Street to take in Orr, Baker and Williamson streets.
- 1954: Sunset Park Elementary School was built at Barnes Street and Ogden Road.
- 1962 and 1967: Arnold and Barnes streets, then Bowser, Epting and Albert streets and the houses on Ogden Road facing the school, on much larger lots.
The survey describes Sunset Park as a historically Black neighborhood laid out during segregation, and the only Black residential area in Rock Hill originally designed to include a park. Freedom Cemetery, at Barnes Street and Ogden Road, dates to no later than 1911, the survey says. Most houses are single-story Minimal Traditional and Ranch homes.
The city’s Resource and Education Development Initiative (REDI), which coordinates housing, infrastructure, public safety and community services in selected neighborhoods, is working in Sunset Park, according to the city’s neighborhood revitalization page.
