Two deputies fired after a man wanted by Clover police pointed a gun at one of them on Lloyd White Road Wednesday, the sheriff's office said. SLED is investigating.
Two York County deputies shot a man Wednesday after he pointed a gun at one of them at the end of a chase, the York County Sheriff’s Office said. The State Law Enforcement Division, known as SLED, is investigating.
The shooting happened on Lloyd White Road, north of Clover. That is about 20 miles northwest of Rock Hill. The sheriff’s office described it in a release posted Thursday.
What the sheriff’s office said happened
According to the release:
- At about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, deputies were asked to help the Clover Police Department find a man with outstanding warrants from that department. He had fled from Clover officers earlier that morning.
- The sheriff’s office also received information that he had recently threatened to harm himself.
- A deputy found him and tried to make a traffic stop. The man would not follow the deputy’s commands and hit the deputy’s vehicle.
- He led the deputy on a short chase and crashed into a ditch on Lloyd White Road.
- As deputies told him to get out of the wrecked vehicle, “the suspect pointed a firearm toward a deputy,” the release said. Two deputies fired, hitting him.
- Deputies gave him aid once the scene was secure.
No deputies were physically injured, the sheriff’s office said.
The release did not name the man, give his condition or say what the Clover warrants were for.
Who is investigating
Sheriff Tony Breeden asked SLED to investigate, as sheriff’s office policy requires after a shooting by its deputies. The two deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave. “All further information will come from SLED,” the release said.
SLED is the state’s law enforcement agency. It investigates shootings by officers at the request of local agencies.
