Voting on Election Day

On Election Day you must vote at your assigned polling place, which is usually not an early voting center. Find it with the state’s polling place lookup, or see the county’s precinct and polling location list. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and anyone in line at 7 p.m. can vote, according to the South Carolina Election Commission.

Three precincts have new Election Day polling places this year, and affected voters were mailed new registration cards:

  • Mt. Holly precinct now votes at Saluda Trail Middle School, gymnasium.
  • Hollis Lakes precinct now votes at Ebinport Elementary School, cafeteria.
  • Tools Fork precinct now votes at Adnah Methodist Church, Family Life Center.

The county says polling places can move at short notice and that it posts signs at any relocated site. Election Day polling places cannot accept absentee ballots.

Photo ID

When you vote in person, bring one of these current photo IDs, according to the state’s photo ID rules:

  • South Carolina driver’s license (or concealed weapons permit)
  • South Carolina voter registration card with photo
  • Federal military ID, including Veterans Affairs benefits cards
  • U.S. passport or passport card

A free photo voter ID is available at the county elections office or the DMV; registered voters need their date of birth and the last four digits of their Social Security number.

Absentee by mail

Request an absentee application by calling 803-684-1242, by mail or in person at the elections office. Completed applications must arrive by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23; state law bars the office from sending a ballot on a later application. Return the ballot by 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3. Sign the voter’s oath on the back of the return envelope and have your signature witnessed by anyone 18 or older.

Your sample ballot on scvotes.gov shows every race for your address.
